Maddy Brown, LMSW

they/them

You deserve to feel completely understood.

I’ll meet you where you are, take time to understand what matters most to you, and help you explore the experiences, beliefs, and patterns shaping your life. Together, we’ll create a path forward that feels personal, meaningful, and genuinely yours.

Therapy with me begins with meeting you exactly where you are. You may come in feeling devastated, heartbroken, inspired, motivated, terrified, stuck, or simply aware that something in your life needs to change. You do not have to arrive knowing exactly what is wrong or what you need. We can begin with what is happening right now and work from there. Together, we’ll explore what is it that you want to work on, learn about yourself, or change.

Maybe you know exactly what you want to change. Maybe you’ve been hurting for a long time and you’re exhausted from carrying it. Or maybe you can’t quite explain what’s wrong — you just know that something in your life doesn’t feel the way you want it to anymore.

Wherever you are when we meet, that’s where I want to start.

I’m not going to expect you to walk into therapy with the perfect explanation of what you’re feeling. Part of my job is to help you find the words. I want to understand what life has been like for you, what matters to you, what hurts, what keeps repeating itself, and what you wish could be different. I won’t just listen to what you tell me; I’ll work hard to truly hear and understand what you mean.

Sometimes the things we struggle with today make much more sense when we understand what happened before them. There may be core “wounds” that you have experienced, which are impactful things that you may have encountered in your early childhood and throughout your life that have over time shaped your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about the world, other people, and about yourself. These “wounds” can translate to a variety of struggles. You may have learned somewhere along the way that people leave, vulnerability isn’t safe, your needs are too much, you shouldn’t trust easily, or there is something about you that needs to be hidden.

No matter what type of barrier it is that you are facing, I believe that it likely has a tie and connection to your history, your core beliefs, and the way those things have shaped your daily life and ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving.  I want us to get curious about those pieces of your story rather than judging them.  I believe that within each person, there is an innate wisdom that can be accessed through talking with a trusted, trained individual such as myself.  I always believe that you know yourself best, and I will provide a personalized, collaborative relationship that actually feels helpful for you.

Together, we can explore the past, present, and future and begin to “connect the dots” until the constellation of clarity begins to appear. As the puzzle comes together. It will be a different image for each of us. Still, the final verdict remains the same:  you are whole, you are worthy, you are important, and you can continue to grow and evolve into the healthiest and most fulfilled version of yourself.

My work is informed by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Attachment Theory, and mindfulness, which gives us different ways to understand what you’re experiencing and coping tools to use.  But therapy with me will never be about squeezing you into a particular approach. You know yourself best. You bring your life and your knowledge of yourself. I bring my training, curiosity, compassion, and perspective. We’ll put those things together and figure out what actually feels right for you.

"Maddy approaches therapy with genuine curiosity about the person in front of them, really taking the time to understand not only what someone is experiencing, but what may be underneath it. If you’re looking for real depth to understand yourself better, you'll find that with Maddy."
"There is both understanding of what is happening and positive change in Maddy’s approach. The work will be about understanding where a pattern came from and deciding what to do with it now. Maddy cares so much about empowering you to move toward the life you want to live."
“Maddy would NEVER judge anybody. You can be anxious, excited, scattered, cry, laugh, ramble, or completely lose your train of thought. You don’t need to have the right words or know in advance what you want to say. You can just show up and be yourself.”

Over time, therapy can become a place to make sense of pieces of your experience that may have previously felt disconnected. We might explore how something you experienced years ago relates to a belief you hold today, how that belief influences the way you respond in relationships, or why a familiar pattern continues even when part of you wants something different.

For me, this process is not about deciding that everything from your past needs to be changed or “fixed.”  It is about developing greater clarity about what has shaped you and giving you more room to decide what you want to carry forward.  As those connections become clearer, you may begin noticing which thoughts, beliefs, behaviors, and patterns continue to serve you and which ones no longer fit the life you want to create. We will move through that process collaboratively and at a pace that respects where you are. I want therapy to give you space to understand yourself while also helping you translate that understanding into meaningful change.

My hope is to help you strengthen your ability to recognize your own needs, understand your patterns, and make choices that feel increasingly aligned with what matters to you.  Growth does not require becoming an entirely different person. It can mean understanding yourself more fully, recognizing your worth, and continuing to evolve in ways that feel authentic to you.

FAVORITE SELF-CARE

I love art! Sketching, painting with watercolors or acrylics, collages or clay… any kind of art! You will often find me engulfed in art in my free time.
My friends and family are deeply important to me and I am often also spending time with my friends or FaceTiming my 2 young nephews and sister who live in Wyoming. My family, chosen and biological, is my world.

Nature also means a lot to me. I like sitting in the grass or taking a mindful walk in nature, though my dog Hazel prefers a faster pace! lol

FUN FACTS

  • I am vegetarian and have been since middle school! This was inspired by my love for all living creatures.
  • I have a rescue dog, Hazel, that I’ve had since she was 10 months old. She is a pit bull mix with a lot of trauma. I joke and say, “Yeah, my dog has a high ACE score (assessment of Adverse Childhood Experiences).” But she is a sweet baby and she is my motivator and also a calm, grounding presence for me.
  • I love creative writing, such as poetry. Sometimes my clients share their own poetry in session and we are able to connect and explore their feelings through it.
  • I have a small plant collection that I’m passionate about — including a monstera, some pothos, a bamboo, aloe vera, and a peace lily.

LIFE MOTTO

  • “Remember that at any given moment, there are a thousand things you can love.”author Daniel Levithan
  • Live and love to your fullest. Break your heart into a thousand pieces and then recover again and again. It’s worth it to love and live in this life. I think it’s the meaning of our lives to get to know ourselves and to love deeply.
  • “Just come back.”  Life can knock us off course. We can disconnect, shut down, lose ourselves for a while, or need time to feel everything we’re feeling. What matters is that we can always find our way back—to ourselves, to the people who love us, and to the life that is still here waiting for us.
