LGBTQIA+ Mental Health

BE PROUD

THIS IS A SAFE SPACE.

Many individuals who identify as a part of the LGBTQIA+ community face unique mental health challenges due to the societal stigma and discrimination that they may experience. Many struggle with depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders as a result of feeling rejected, misunderstood, or unsupported by their families and communities. Even those with the most supportive, loving families might still experience shame or discomfort from the larger community outside the home. Unfortunately, the world can be an unkind place at times and we deeply empathize with those who have experienced oppression or mistreatment of any type. We recognize that you may have unique stories and experiences and we want to give you the space to express these authentically. It can be hard to feel misrepresented in the world, to feel like an outsider, or to struggle to “find your people” (those who provide unwavering support and validation to you).

We also understand the needs of transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals who often suffer from dysphoria or distress related to their gender identity, which can lead to further mental health problems. We understand the complexities of questioning gender and safely experimenting with gender fluidity. We give you permission to explore, discover, embrace, learn, and grow through every part of your journey. You deserve to fully express yourself on the outside in whatever ways align with your true self on the inside.

We also want to hold space for those who identify as LGBTQIA+ but are coming to therapy for concerns that have nothing to do with their sexual orientation or gender identity. For example, you may not need any support in these LGBTQIA+ territories but you still deserve a knowledgeable, trained therapist “who gets you” so that you don’t have to waste any time explaining or educating your therapist on LGBTQIA+ etiquette or identity formation. Above all, it is essential for LGBTQIA+ individuals to receive specialized care from healthcare providers who are knowledgeable about these issues and equipped to provide compassionate support.

At River Oaks psychology, we care deeply about your unique experiences. We’re on your side. We truly want you to feel wholeheartedly valued, accepted, affirmed, and authentic here. This is a space where you can be unapologetically yourself, because that’s how it should be – all the time. We believe in celebrating the strength and resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community while supporting you on your journey towards healing and empowerment.

Ultimately, promoting understanding and inclusivity across all facets of society is crucial for improving LGBTQIA+ mental health and also for creating a world where everyone feels valued and respected regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

We’re here for you.

One of the ways therapy helps LGBTQIA+ individuals is by providing a safe space to explore their thoughts and feelings objectively. Many members of this community struggle with feelings of shame and self-doubt, and therapy allows them to understand the roots of these feelings and develop strategies for dealing with them. We can provide guidance and support in exploring issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, relationships, and family dynamics. We can also help you overcome negative thought patterns and harmful coping mechanisms that stem from social stigma.
