Christina Root, LLMSW

Hello! I'm so glad you're here.

At the age of 17, I felt inspired to become a therapist, driven by my own journey of seeking healing and support through therapy after experiencing trauma and grief. I am sharing this personal aspect of my story because I truly understand what it’s like to seek support and believe that no one should feel alone.

As a therapist, my primary goal is to support you on your journey towards better mental and emotional well-being. I’m committed to creating a nurturing space where you can openly share your thoughts, feelings, and concerns without fear of judgment. I want to listen attentively to your experiences, your triumphs, and your struggles. By understanding your unique story, I can offer insights and skills for coping that might not be immediately apparent, helping you in gaining a clearer understanding of yourself and your ability to navigate your circumstances.

“Caring, smart, and committed to excellent therapy work. She has a lot of empathy and natural ability to connect with people of diverse identities and experiences.”

Diversity holds a special significance in my journey as a therapist. During my time at Oakland University, I immersed myself in a rich multicultural environment, living and collaborating with international students. This experience ignited my passion for cultural understanding and communication, prompting me to embark on a journey of learning Spanish and studying abroad in both England and Spain. I’m so grateful for how this has given me a heightened sensitivity and passion for being an ally to others with diverse backgrounds and unique stories. I truly believe that all voices deserve to be valued and heard in therapy.

I provide therapy in both English and Spanish, ensuring accessibility for a wider range of individuals. I strive to create an environment where language is not a barrier to seeking help and where culturally relevant care is readily available. From symptoms of anxiety and depression to the weight of stress and the scars of trauma, I approach each individual’s journey with sensitivity and respect, recognizing the unique intersections of their identities and experiences. I have also had the privilege of offering advocacy services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, recognizing the importance of addressing these issues within a cultural context. Above all, I’m a firm believer in empowering individuals to navigate their lives with strength and resilience.

During sessions, I use a range of effective modalities tailored to your specific needs and preferences. These include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for identifying and transforming negative thought patterns, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to address trauma, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for post-traumatic stress, Internal Family Systems (IFS) to explore internal dynamics, and Motivational Interviewing for collaborative goal-setting. I customize the use of these modalities to create a flexible and adaptable therapeutic journey that prioritizes your comfort, empowerment, and progress, as we navigate the path towards healing and growth together. We can also utilize mind-body-spirit practices such as meditation, yoga, and spirituality. As your therapist, I plan to follow your lead so that you feel confident, comfortable, and cared-for while working on your goals!
